The Story of Cyprus IVF Centre and Dr Halil Ibrahim Tekin

For over 25 years, under the leadership of Dr Halil Ibrahim Tekin, Cyprus IVF Centre has proudly helped thousands of families achieve their dream of parenthood. Born on 8 September 1962 in Nicosia, Dr Tekin began his education at Tavas İstiklal Primary School and later attended the prestigious Galatasaray High School. He graduated from Istanbul University Cerrahpasa Faculty of Medicine in 1987 and briefly specialised at the Council of Forensic Medicine.

Dr Tekin continued his medical career abroad, working in 1985 at Lille University in France under Prof. C. Proy in Endocrinologic Surgery for five months. Between 1987 and 1989, he worked as an emergency physician and forensic doctor at Denizli State Hospital, earning an Emergency Certificate from Ankara Numune Hospital in 1988. He served at Pakize Tarzi Hospital from 1991 to 2004 before leaving due to hospital renovations.

Specialisation at Cyprus IVF Centre

Dr Tekin completed his specialty training in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Zeynep Kamil Hospital in 1995, marking a turning point in his career with a deep expertise in women’s health and childbirth. In 1997, he joined the IVF centre established under the leadership of the Israeli Harovitz Institute at Zeynep Kamil Hospital. He received his first IVF training from world-renowned Prof. Laufer and worked alongside pioneers such as Prof. T. Atasu, Prof. U. Özekici, and Prof. Sahmay, further specialising in IVF treatments.

Between 1997 and 2004, Dr Tekin worked at Pakize Tarzi Hospital and obtained the Assisted Reproductive Techniques (ART) licence, officially certifying his competence in IVF and other reproductive treatments.

Achievements of Cyprus IVF Centre

In 2000, Dr Tekin led the establishment of the first IVF centre in Northern Cyprus (TRNC), which also became the first donation IVF centre in the Turkish world. Under his leadership, by 2017, over 28,500 IVF procedures had been performed, helping nearly 25,000 families experience the joy of parenthood. This success positioned Dr Tekin as a global leader and brand in the field of donation.

He founded the Middle East and Balkans IVF Centre in 2004, and since May 2014 has worked at the Near East University IVF Centre and Famagusta Medical Centre’s ART unit. As of March 2025, he plans to move to a new centre in Mutluyaka in September 2025, continuing uninterrupted services at Yaşam Hospital’s 2nd floor during the transition.

Each year, over 250 foreign families from the UK, USA, China, Norway, and Australia receive treatment here. Dr Tekin actively participates in scientific studies and international meetings, pioneering innovations in IVF. His vision has made TRNC a world centre for IVF treatments.

The quality of the embryology lab is crucial to IVF success. Cyprus IVF Centre owns a state-of-the-art embryology laboratory equipped with the latest technology and staffed by experienced embryologists and technicians. Dr Tekin emphasizes that the lab accounts for approximately 50% of IVF success. Together with ovulation induction and embryo transfer, a high-quality lab can increase pregnancy chances even with medium-quality eggs or sperm. The lab’s technology is continuously updated to meet international standards.

Dr Tekin’s Multifaceted Personality

Beyond medicine, Dr Tekin is a versatile individual. From 1974 to 1981, he played basketball in Galatasaray Sports Club’s junior and senior teams. During his university and specialty training, he coached and managed Galatasaray teams for about 10 years. He served as vice president of the basketball branch under Yalçın Granit and remains a member of the Galatasaray Club and Galatasaray Association’s advisory boards.

Dr Tekin speaks French, English, and Russian, and holds NPPL and JAAR PPL pilot licenses, enjoying aviation as a hobby. He is a father of two and values time with his family deeply.
